Comprehensive plan drafts leading up to Planning Commission and City Council Approval

The purpose of a comprehensive plan is to enable government officials and citizens to effectively manage development growth and change while balancing it with the community’s natural, cultural, social, economic, and capital resources. In late 2020, the City of Georgetown Planning Commission began the process of developing a new comprehensive plan to guide the City’s development and public investment over the next 10 to 20 years.

This is the Final Working Draft of the 2040 Comprehensive Plan that will go before the Planning Commission on February 25th 2025. This posting marks the required 30 day Public Notice Period. Please send all comments, questions and concerns to the Planning Department via email to Pgaytan@georgetownsc.gov. 
Thanks to all City Departments and the Public for helping get to this Draft. Please note there will be a Public Hearing/Input section during the February 25th 2025 Meeting. Please see Website Calendar for the Agenda.

You can’t build a house without blueprints. Likewise, you can’t grow a community without a vision, one that is captured in the Comprehensive Plan.

So, if a Comprehensive Plan is so meaningful, why is the City’s Planning department apparently down playing its importance and implying that it some form of obligatory formality?

Introduction
This post is a logical progression to my previous article which highlighted my involvement with the 2021 Comprehensive Plan (CP) task force which, in my opinion was not utilized in way that gave its members a sense of involvement or achievement.  The final draft, sent to the Planning Commission in February of 2022 culminated in a plan that was woefully weak. However, as a unified community, it is time to move forward and decide how best to proceed and rectify the past shortcomings.
